Built around 1770, it was the home of Colonel Joel Lane, who later became known as the “Father of Raleigh”. There really is an eclectic mix of old and new architecture in Raleigh, with important buildings being built all the way through the 19th and 20th Century. Buildings that still stand today, meaning people can visit and really understand the history of Raleigh, North Carolina and America. Visit Fayetteville Street Mall to see the Masonic Temple, the Briggs Hardware building and the Raleigh City Museum. The Briggs Hardware Building was Raleigh’s first skyscraper, with the first floor housing the Raleigh City Museum. People can also visit Raleigh to appreciate the very best in Modern Architecture. The Raleigh Convention Center was built in 2008, and it boasts the Cree Shimmer Wall, a 9,284-square-foot piece of art which adorns the outside of the Raleigh Convention Center. There is also the Marbles Kids Museum, built in 2007. This incredible building has a wall which wraps itself round the Museum, which is filled with one million marbles, that light up at night! The architecture in Raleigh is too much to take in over one day, and visitors should stay as long as possible, in order to really soak up the history of Raleigh, North Carolina and America.
